Before, During, and After the War: Portraits of Soldiers

A picture can express a thousand of words and it even speaks louder than words as it is actually via a picture that we can tap to our heart rather than reading a whole long story. Given this, let us see how Lalage Snow proves this. It actually tells more about the psychological drama of soldiers before, during, and after the war by making a time-lapse portrait series of them. The photographs, titled “We are the not dead,” depict an 8-month period in the life of British soldiers serving in Afghanistan, and the changes they had underwent physically as well as mentally. This can be clearly seen when scrutinizing their tired and weary faces, during and in the post war phases.

The British journalist, photographer, and filmmaker, who is currently stationed in Afghanistan, claims that the goal of this initiative was to divert attention away from the politics of war and the mounting body count of British soldiers killed or injured. In addition to recognizing their bravery, Lalage sought to offer them a voice: “‘We Are The Not Dead’ is an attempt to give the brave young men and women a chance to describe how it actually is.”
