Students Drew Jarding and Kenzie Crimmins, both in high school in Illinois, are living proof that school dress codes discriminate against women. The two teens wore identical clothing to school and filmed their day before sharing it on TikTok. All day long, Drew and Kenzie both wore crop tops. However, it was just Kenzie who got in trouble because of her outfit. According to these two students, there is conclusive evidence that students are discriminated against based on gender.
In less than 24 hours, it received more than 1.8 million likes on TikTok and 6.3 million views. The video also garnered 10.8k comments, igniting a critical debate. To learn more about Drew’s viral video and school clothing code, we reached out to him, “In my opinion, there is no justification for the dress code other than to say that its to control the girls. This means that if instructors and administrators can tell children what to wear, they’re free to tell them whatever else they want.”
To prove that their school’s dress code is sexist, Drew and Kenzie wore crop tops.
For most part of the day, everything went smoothly.
The duo even danced with their crop tops on, in the presence of their teachers
Kenzie, on the other hand, got written up for showing off her stomach in 7th period. While, Drew, had no trouble at all.
“I was blown away by how successful my video went viral online,” Drew told in an interview. Although he was aware of the video’s potential and that he would have to release it in order to expose the prejudices of dress codes, he didn’t anticipate it to get so much attention.
Although the film has been widely shared, it hasn’t had the expected effect at school. “The situation at my school, as well as at other schools, has remained unchanged. The fact that this issue is being brought to light is commendable,” Drew added.
Rather than waiting for others to fix the problem, Drew believes that we must take the initiative to improve the sexist school dress code situation.
“Raise awareness and take action! Then, when teachers or staff write you or someone you know up for a bad grade, protest!”
Over the past few months, Drew has been filming himself openly violating the school’s dress code
No one has called him out yet. Drew believes that if he had been a female student, things would have been different.
His companion Kenzie, on the other hand, donned a crop top and tights. Aside from wearing a similar kind of clothing as Kenzie’s, Drew decided to make Kenzie’s outfit a little less obvious in an attempt at drawing attention to their hypocritical attitude. “Just so you can prove how biased they truly are.”
The two buddies had no problems with the staff during the day. When they were dancing in the presence of a group of teachers, wearing their crop tops, they had no problems at all. But, Kenzie got written up for “showing her stomach” in 7th period. As for Drew, despite the fact that his attire was clearly not concealing his stomach, he didn’t get into any difficulty.
Below is Drew’s super-viral ‘TikTok’ video. It was viewed by 6.3 million people!
Kenzie’s top was complained to be excessively revealing by the school staff, who suggested her to change in the resource room. As she said “Honestly, it just makes me want to wear stuff like that more since the standards are so different.”
Crop tops, ripped denim, and spaghetti strap dresses are prohibited at Drew and Kenzie’s school. And to top it all off – students aren’t allowed to wear dresses, slacks, or even shorts that are higher than the knee! There are other videos of Drew filming himself wearing attire that might get him into trouble if he were a female student, but no one has called him out on it yet.
“A lot of people suggested me to try it with a girl and see how others react to the dress code. I’d known for a while that dress codes were unfair, but I didn’t realize how bad they were. That whole week, they hadn’t said anything to me about my revealing outfits that violated the dress code or whatever.”
Some online users have reacted in different ways to the youngsters’ clothing experiment:
